PEAC Health & Fitness Partners with Students from Lawrence Intermediate School and the Rutgers Extension to Host a Caps for Cancer
January 15th, 2016

Ewing, New Jersey (January 15, 2016) Lawrence Intermediate School 5th Grade student, Abbie Duncan gathered friends, family and classmates to sew caps for cancer patients.

Moved by seeing her mother’s and grandmother’s friends going through cancer treatment, Abbie wanted to find a way to help.

Following a month long sweater drive at PEAC Health and Fitness to gather materials to sew the caps, about 25 students from Abbie’s school, their parents along with Abbie’s mom, Jackie Duncan and grandmother Betty Voss donated their time and energy cutting, pinning, and sewing 60 caps with another 30 prepped and ready to be sewn.

Caps will be distributed to cancer patients at Capital Health Hopewell and Princeton Medical Center.

Sharon Gore from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County facilitated the event. This was a zero waste project as the sleeves from the sweaters are being made into fingerless gloves by the Mercer County 4-H Sewing Club and donated to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the sweater remnants have been taken to Hopewell Valley Central High School for their Spin Green Project.

“Abbie and her family are long time members of PEAC Health and Fitness. When Abbie approached the club we were excited about engaging the entire PEAC community in this event,” says PEAC Events Coordinator, Christine Salmon. “What amazing partnership between PEAC, Lawrence Intermediate School and Mercer County 4-H on a community service project for such a worthy cause!”

For more information contact Christine Salmon by email, or by phone at 609-883-2000. PEAC is located at 1440 Lower Ferry Road, Ewing, NJ.
